Gopalganj districtis located in the Dhaka division of Bangladesh. The main city of the district is also called Gopalganj. It is bounded by Faridpur district on the north, Pirojpur and Bagerhat districts on the south, Madaripur and Barisal districts on the east, Narail district on the west.

Gopalganj Town: Gopalganj District’s town is a municipal town. It was established in 1972. It consists of nine (9) wards and forty nine (49) mahallas. The area of the town is 8.59km ² (square kilometers). The town has a population of 40987.
Gopalganj district was established in 1984. Earlier it was a subdivision under Faridpur district. It consists of five (5) upazilas, four (4) municipalities, thirty six (36) wards, sixty eight (68) union parishads, 618 mouzas, 880 villages and 85 mahallas.
